The international sustainability and responsible business consultancy.

Duncan Gray

I’m a thinker, doer and team developer. I love nothing better than a big complicated question where there isn’t an easy answer.

My role is to break down very complicated challenges into manageable chunks. Sometimes this means helping an organisation scale up to manage the challenge but often times it means reframing challenges and putting in place programmes that allows them to overcome the negatives to make a positive contribution to the world.

My experience leading sustainability teams in large businesses, working in-house in charities, and as a consultant, means that I am able to anticipate the kinds of practical hurdles which are inevitable in large organisations. I aim to solve issues before they become problems.

I also have the privilege of managing most of the team at BRODIE which is a joy. We push ourselves hard because we know that when we deliver great work the vulnerable in society and our natural world benefit.

Why I do it

Business is in my blood. I come from a family where owning and running businesses is the norm. From cotton to confectionery, tobacco to publishing, I was brought up to know that business can be an engine for good.

What my family also taught me is that a great business is only ever a means to a bigger end. Rather than step into my family business, I’ve chosen to work with other businesses to serve a bigger purpose.

If I didn’t do this, I’d be…

An architect. But for a hopeless art teacher at school I was pretty sure I was going to bring together art and engineering to make beautiful things. Happily, I get to bring together my creative and technical sides every day at BRODIE.

What I do when I’m not here

I’m a husband, dad, ordained priest in the Anglican Church, keen swimmer and proud Scot so there’s a good chance you’ll find me in a loch, up a mountain, changing nappies or in my parish Church.

Potted CV:

I’ve been to a few universities – Oxford (MA), Regent College (University of British Columbia) (DipCS), Edinburgh (MSc), Open University (Diploma), Cambridge (MSt), Kings (MPhil) and Durham (DipTheo). I now love working with students who are often encountering sustainability thinking for the first time.

I’ve worked in a variety of environments – from in-house roles at Mars Inc. and Compass Group, through an amazing opportunity with two charities working on London 2012, to several years consulting on sustainability strategy. The best bit about being a consultant is the variety and the ability to make connections between apparently different sectors.
